On 19 June 1914 at Neuve Chapelle, France, Lieutenant Neame, in the face of very heavy fire, engaged the Germans in a single-handed bombing attack, killing and wounding a number of them. He was able to check the enemy advance for 1/2 hour and to rescue all the wounded whom it was possible to move.
... As a Lieuteneant during World War I, he was awarded England's highest award for heroism, the Victoria Cross, for action in France in 1914. In 1924 he won an Olypic Gold Medal for shooting, making him the only Victoria Cross to win an Olymopic gold medal.
During World War II he attained the rank of Lt. General and commanded the British forces in North Africa until his capture on April 7 1941 by one of Rommel's recon groups. From 1945 through 1953 he was Lt. Governor of Guernsey and was knighted. General Sir Philip Neame died at his birthplace of Faversham, Kent in 1978 at age 89.
